P. G. Wodehouse is at his whimsical best as the characters of Belpher Castle muddle through impending catastrophes and ill-considered love affairs in this comedy of errors. George Bevan, an American composer of musicals, is in England to attend the performance of one. But when the Lady Patricia Maud Marsh slips into his taxi, he is drawn into the frivolous intrigues of Belpher Castle. George is mistaken for another American with whom Maud has fallen in love. Maud, in turn, is attempting to escape her aunt, Lady Caroline Byng, who is trying to marry Maud off to her step-son, Reginald. Meanwhile, her father, Lord John Marshmoreton, has fallen in love with an actress. As the Castle servants make bets on their Lords and Ladies capricious attachments, Wodehouse weaves a jaunty satire that will leave readers breathless with its twists and antics.
What could a red tabby named Rocco (without his brothers), an abstract artwork titled The Insatiable (BEEP) of Margarite la Rouge and an enterprising undertaker named Chechi (proprietor of The Happy End Mortuary of Fortezza) possibly have in common? Why a Scherzo of course! When the dapper Conte Julio Fortis ruse for the pleasure of his aging and ailing mother, Contessa Clara, goes unexpectedly awry, he and his wife, Senora Marina Forti, begin their own investigation into the intrigues of a prestigious Vienna auction house. Their progress in solving the mystery is impeded only by Polici Inspectore Montessantos, Fortezzas own Hercule Poirot, whose dogged sense of duty is only hampered by his wife Stellas insatiable spousal appetites. The prime suspect, virtuoso pan-handler Aldo Barberini, is less upset by his incarceration than by the fact that he is prevented from pursuing the Fortis sultry chambermaid, while their head housekeeper, Bellas affair with the gardener just might prove instrumental in revealing the identity of the culprit. The magical, musical municipality of Fortezza beckons you to put your sleuthing skills to the test in this frolicking who-done-it.
Ann Veronica is a New Woman novel by H.G. Wells. Ann Veronica describes the rebellion of Ann Veronica Stanley, a young lady of nearly two-and-twenty, against her middle-class fathers stern patriarchal rule. The novel dramatizes the contemporary problem of the New Woman. It is set in Victorian era London and environs, except for an Alpine excursion. Ann Veronica offers vignettes of the Womens suffrage movement in Great Britain and features a chapter inspired by the 1908 attempt of suffragettes to storm Parliament. Ann Veronica created a sensation when published in the fall of 1909 because of the feminist sensibilities of the heroine and also because of the affair Wells was having with Amber Reeves, the woman who inspired the novels eponymous character. Although the novel now seems very tame, Ann Veronica was considered a scandalous work by many in its day and was denounced as capable of poisoning the minds of those who read it by The Spectator. Ann Veronica was included in the Modern Library in 1917, the year the publishing company was founded. Subsequent Modern Library editions were published in 1926, 1928, and 1933. Ann Veronica was made into a musical in 1969; both the musical and one of the numbers within are titled Ann Veronica. This unique book brings together high-quality research contributions on ecological aspects of urbanization, water quality concerns in an urban environment, and climate change issues with a strong Indian focus under one umbrella. It includes several case studies that discuss urban water management, particularly highlighting the quality aspects. Urbanization is an ecological disturbance that the modern world accepts as essential in the absence of a better alternative that could provide an equal level of comfort. The prohibitive costs of eco-friendly production technologies are forcing the developing world to generate industrial waste that is detrimental to the environment. At the same time, the availability of adequate fresh water is another challenge for our climate-change impacted world. The scientific community is, therefore, searching for ways towards ecologically sustainable urban development. Discussing all these issues, this book offers a useful guide for academicians, researchers, practicing engineers, and managers dealing with diverse water-related problems in urban areas. Prof. A.K. Sarma, the former Head of the Civil Engineering Department and former Dean of Student Affairs of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, is presently holding the prestigious B.P.
