This is the first book to present a detailed account of the musical achievements of Julian Bream. In a wide-ranging celebration of his artistry the book offers essential perspectives on vital elements of twentieth century guitar history and reveals how Julian Bream succeeded in establishing the instrument as a uniquely expressive force on the contemporary scene. As well as his phenomenal success in inspiring composers such as Britten, Tippett, Walton, Arnold, Berkeley, Henze, Brouwer, Takemitsu, etc., to write for the guitar, Bream is also renowned as the twentieth century´s greatest lutenist and a passionate advocate of Elizabethan music.
(2017/Electro-Fi) 14 Tracks (73:12) - Gatefold Digisleeve - In Julian´s words: ´In the summer of 2015, I participated in ´´Music From The Americas´´, a series of live concerts put on by CIUT Radio in Toronto. I performed a variety of songs dealing (mostly) with ´folk heroes´ and ´villians´ of the Americas. Andrew Galloway attended that concert and thought we should try making a CD like that? I´d previously recorded some of the songs I performed at that show, so I didn´t re-do them on here - but I´ve added some that I did not play at the CIUT show. This CD is more stripped-down than my previous discs. I still perform regularly with my musical friends, but, I´ve had many requests for some more solo recordings... I did, however, smuggle some of my musician friends onto this CD!´
In the variety hour, Joe Bevilacqua performs his own jazz compositions, accompanied by Paul Salomone on piano, Edward Fuqua on bass, Leif Eric on guitar, and Jim Mason on drums. In addition, Joe Bev performs Daws Butler´s ´´Magic Drums´´ with Joe Gatto on drums, and sings Cab Calloway and Irving Mills´ ´´Minnie the Moocher´´ as his Camp Waterlogg character Sgt. Lefty and the Chipmunks, featuring Julian Baker on trombone and keyboard. The selections are gleaned from Bevilacqua´s hundreds of hours of audio work that spans more than 40 years, including ´´The Withering of Willoughby and the Professor´´, ´´Uncle Dunkle and Donnie´´, and ´´Camp Waterlogg´´, including: ´´Do I Dare Believe´´, ´´I´m Big, You´re Small´´, ´´You Can´t Tell Me What to Do´´ (instrumental), ´´You Can´t Tell Me What to Do´´ (vocal), ´´Make the Earth Say Beans´´, ´´What You See, You Must Believe´´, ´´The Magic Drums´´, ´´Living in a Witchway´´ (rehearsal), ´´Living in a Witchway (vocal)´´, ´´Living in a Witchway´´ (instrumental), ´´Minnie the Moocher,´´ ´´Mosquito Mother´´, ´´Dances-with-Sven´´, ´´Which Way is it that a Witchway Goes´´ (instrumental), ´´Which Way is it that a Witchway Goes´´ (vocal), and ´´Ring-Around-the-Rosey Blues´´. 1.
