Stephen Sondheim and the Reinvention of the American Musical:University Press of Mississippi Robert L. Mclaughlin
From West Side Story in 1957 to Road Show in 2008, the musicals of Stephen Sondheim and his collaborators have challenged the conventions of American musical theater and expanded the possibilities of what musical plays can do, how they work, and what they mean. Sondheim´s brilliant array of work, including such musicals as Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, has established him as the preeminent composer/lyricist of his, if not all, time. Stephen Sondheim and the Reinvention of the American Musical places Sondheim´s work in two contexts: the exhaustion of the musical play and the postmodernism that, by the 1960s, deeply influenced all the American arts. Sondheim´s musicals are central to the transition from the Rodgers and Hammerstein - style musical that had dominated Broadway stages for 20 years to a new postmodern musical. This new style reclaimed many of the self-aware, performative techniques of the 1930s musical comedy to develop its themes of the breakdown of narrative knowledge and the fragmentation of identity. Stephen Sondheim and the Reinvention of the American Musical offers close readings of all of Sondheim´s musicals and finds in them critiques of the operation of power, questioning of conventional systems of knowledge, and explorations of contemporary identity. Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke: David Bowie had an extraordinary talent for reinvention. But at the beginning of his career, he made the most significant transformation of his life: from ´´David´´ to Bowie. In 1969, shortly after the release of his first hit single, David and his girlfriend Angie move into Haddon Hall, a sprawling Victorian villa in the London suburbs. Part commune, part creative hub, the house becomes home to a community of musicians, hippies, and hangers-on. As egos clash and parties get out of hand, David keeps writing: ´´Changes,´´ ´´Kooks,´´ ´´Life on Mars´´-songs that will propel him to global fame. Charting Bowie´s personal life, the development of his music, and the transformation of his image, Haddon Hall is an evocative portrait of a young artist presiding over a musical revolution.
The Nice were Keith Emerson´s band prior to superstardom in Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Formed as a backing band for soul singer PP Arnold, The Nice laid the foundations for what would become progressive rock. Their debut album mixed rock with jazz and classical music, and their hard rock reinvention of Leonard Bernstein´s ´America´ propelled them into the US and UK charts, influencing their biggest fan, Jimi Hendrix, to reinterpret ´The Star Spangled Banner´. ´The Story of The Nice: Hang on to a Dream´, first published in 2002 and now fully revised and updated, chronicles the history of the band. Drawing on interviews with band members and their associates, together with archive sources, it is a fascinating tale of musical ambition, engagingly told with a keen eye for period detail. The Brooklyn-based comedian Eugene Mirman is the stand-up king of hipsterville. He was a regular on the HBO series Flight of the Concords and now appears on Adult Swim’s Delocated — and you can see him on YouTube inventing slogans to promote Canada. Next, Merrill Garbus is the performer and multi-instrumentalist behind tUnE-yArDs — a music project that blends African-inspired rhythms and vocals with electric bass and saxophone. But she only discovered music after a failed career as a puppeteer. She tells Kurt Andersen she found musical inspiration as a student living in Africa; her mother’s ukelele, purchased at an Army-Navy store, helped her to take the plunge. Then, we asked our studio audience to tell us about their dream jobs. Eugene Mirman reads some of the responses, from ´´astronaut” to ´´artisan glass blower.” And finally, one classic reinvention fantasy goes like this: you leave a square, respectable job and write a best-selling book. Elizabeth Wurtzel did just that — but in reverse. She was in her twenties when Prozac Nation made her famous overnight. She became a rock critic and wrote a memoir about her addictions. Then she did the not-obvious thing and went to law school. Wurtzel explains to Kurt Andersen why intellectual property law is where’s it’s at. [Broadcast Date: Feburary 11, 2012] 1. DescriptionThis matching folio includes every song from Bob Dylan´s album Shadows In The Night, the critically acclaimed album of standard pop tunes originally recorded by Frank Sinatra. Featuring all ten songs arranged for Piano, Voice and Guitar, with full lyrics and chord boxes, this songbook is perfect for fans of Dylan, Sinatra or simply fantastic tunes. The album itself was highly anticipated, with Bob Dylan announcing he was un-covering a collection of classic pop standards, hand-selected by himself. Dylan is certainly no stranger to cover versions, drawing from the folk tradition in his early career and putting out 2 back-to-back folk cover albums in the early 1990s. The news that this album would be a collection of songs made famous by Sinatra came as a surprise, considering Sinatra´s derision of the early days of the folk scene. Despite this, time forged a mutual respect, with Dylan even, perhaps half-jokingly, claiming he was merely a song and dance man. Dylan´s long-term love for songs such as these resulted in Shadows In The Night, a collection of songs made famous by one of the greatest singers ever, performed by possibly the greatest songwriter ever.Shadows In The Night is not just a collection of standards, however, it´s a beautiful reinterpretation of simple songs featuring some of Dylan´s best singing in recent years. With this Bob Dylan sheet music, you can learn all songs from the album, including I´m A Fool To Want You, Full Moon And Empty Arms, and Why Try To Change Me Now. The career of Bob Dylan has been full of twists, turns and continual reinvention. Throughout, though, the consistent thread has been that he dictates his own path, and this album is an intensely personal one. On the album, you can hear the rustling of paper, the measured intake of breath, and you get the real sense that these songs are truly meaningful. The Shadows In The Night sheet music allows you to learn these wonderful new arrangements in their entirety, the subdued Guitar chords, the Piano accompaniment, and Dylan´s unmistakeable vocal part. Songs like Stay With Me and Autumn Leaves feature melancholy melodies that take on an entirely new meaning when sung by such a musical legend, while the highlight of the album, That Lucky Old Sun, has a stunningly uplifting vocal performance that perfectly complements the quietly beautiful arrangement of his band. The subtle, subdued and simple arrangements of these tunes are begging to be covered, performed and played in your own home. The calm backing instruments throughout the album make this Shadows In The Night sheet music songbook perfect for a solo Piano performance, a singer´s reinvention or an intimate and acoustic band cover. With accurate transcriptions, this Bob Dylan sheet music is the best place from which to learn these incredible covers that just call out to be sung over and over.Autumn Leaves [Kosma, Joseph] [Prevert, Jacques] Full Moon And Empty Arms [Mossman, Ted] [Kaye, Buddy] [Rachmaninoff, Sergei] I´m A Fool To Want You [Wolf, Jack] [Herron, Joel] [Sinatra, Frank] Some Enchanted Evening [Rodgers, Richard] [Hammerstein II, Oscar] Stay With Me [Leigh, Carolyn] [Moross, Jerome] That Lucky Old Sun [Gillespie, Haven] [Smith, Beasley] The Night We Called It A Day [Adair, Tom] [Dennis, Matt] What´ll I Do [Berlin, Irving] Where Are You?
